Suhail Amir Secretary Overseas Pakistanis & Human Resource Development
Pakistan continues to be the sixth most populous country in the world with a population of around 190 million. The age composition is heavily tilted in favour of the working age group, which is 15 to 59 years. While 7 percent of the population is above 60 and 33 percent below 15, 60 percent falls within the employable age bracket.
This has considerable implications for the current and future development of the country. Pakistan’s labour force, tenth largest in the world, stands at 60.09 million. Pakistan is also one of the largest labour exporting countries of the region with a large and diverse diaspora spread all over the world. Remittances from overseas Pakistanis are the second largest source of foreign exchange after exports and make significant contribution to the socio-economic development of the country.
Pakistan has ratified 36 Conventions of the International Labour Organization. Meeting the labour standards set by these international obligations also falls within the mandate of the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis & Human Resource Development. This places heavy responsibility on the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis & Human Resource Development. With a deep sense of purpose and dedication of efforts, the Ministry is working tirelessly to fulfill its mandate and responsibilities. Working towards welfare of Pakistani workforce employed within the country and abroad, exploring potential employment opportunities abroad and promoting safe migration are just some of the functions which are being met efficiently. Securing the rights of labour and ensuring compliance to international labour standards for creating decent working conditions for all is our mission and we hope to work in unison with all stakeholders to achieve this objective.
