PROFILE:

Karachi, the only port city in Pakistan, serves as principal gateway to Pakistan. Almost all external trade handled by its two major operating ports via Karachi Port and Port Qasim. It is the biggest metropolis of Pakistan, having population of  about 11.5 millions. Over the years, it has emerged as the industrial, financial and commercial capital of the country. The Chamber of Commerce & Industry Karachi enjoys singular distinction of being the premier Chamber of the country, representing the mainstream of economic activities by virtue of its location in industrial and commercial hub of the country. It was formed in 1959 through the amalgamation of four trade bodies in Karachi at that time, namely, the Pakistan Merchants Association, Buyers and Shippers Chamber, Chamber of Commerce Pakistan and All Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry. It was restricted under the Trade Organizations Ordinance 1961, which regulates the working of  the Trade Bodies in the country.

The Chamber is affiliated with the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industries The Chamber is made up of businesses, small and large, as well as professional firms, associates and non-profit organizations. The members work collectively to accomplish that which none could undertake alone.The present Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Karachi was formed in 1959 through the amalgamation of four trade bodies in Karachi at that time, namely, the Pakistan Merchants Association, Buyers and Shippers Chamber, Chamber of Commerce Pakistan and All Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry. It was restructured under the Trade Organizations Ordinance 1961, which regulates the working of the Trade Bodies in the country.

COMPOSITION:

The Chamber is affiliated with the Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce & Industry. It has two classes of membership, namely, Members and Town Associations. Details can be had from the Membership Department of the Chamber.This Chamber has currently around 15,500 direct members both industrialists and traders. Five Industrial Town Associations, namely, S.I.T.E., Landhi, Korangi, Federal 'B' Area, and North Karachi, are affiliated with it.Thus,the Chamber's effective membership comes to around 50,000. As a consequence of its location in a commercial, financial and industrial center of the country, it represents the main-stream of economic activities.

MANAGEMENT:

The organization's policies and programs are deter-mined by the 30 members of Managing Committee which are elected by the members, out of which 1/2 retire every year and in their place, new members are inducted through election. The Managing Committee every year elects President, Senior Vice President and Vice-President. President controls the working of office and staff and directs all matters of the Chamber, with the assistance of Senior Vice-President and Vice-President.
