Engineer Khurram Dastgir Khan has revitalized Pakistan’s trade diplomacy. He led the successful campaign to obtain GSP+ trade preferences from the European Union and has spearheaded vital negotiations to normalize Pakistan’s regional trade.

 
Minister Khan has energised Pakistan’s engagement at WTO and revived the nation’s quest for market access. He currently directs the teams negotiating free trade agreements with Turkey and Thailand.

The Prime Minister has assigned Engineer Khurram Dastgir Khan the additional responsibilities of the parliamentary business of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Since July 2013, he has replied regularly on behalf of Foreign Affairs to questions and motions in both houses of Parliament.

Minister Khan chairs the Federal Textile Board and also looks after the parliamentary business of the Ministry of Textile Industry.
In his leadership, the Ministry of Commerce has launched Strategic Trade Policy Framework 2015-18, revamped national trade defence laws, managed Pakistan’s accession to TIR convention, and has successfully concluded institutional reforms of the Ministry itself as well as its attached departments. He has steered the drive for a qualitative shift towards value-addition and diversification in Pakistan’s exports.

Before assuming office as Minister for Commerce, Khurram Dastgir Khan served as Chairman Privatisation Commission, and as Minister of State held portfolios of Commerce & Textile Industry, Privatisation, and Science & Technology.

Trained as an engineer at California Institute of Technology, Minister Khan also holds a degree in Economics from Bowdoin College; both in the United States. He is a Life Member of Pakistan Engineering Council.

Khurram Dastgir Khan was elected from his native city of Gujranwala to the National Assembly of Pakistan in 2008 and re-elected in 2013. He earned distinction as Chair of National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Commerce and as a member of the Special Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir as well as the Public Accounts Committee.

During the 2008-13 Parliament he also served on Finance Committee of the National Assembly, Special Committee on Threats to Journalists, and the Standing Committees respectively on National Regulation & Services and on Millennium Development Goals.

Affiliated with Pakistan Muslim League-N [PMLN], Khurram Dastgir Khan has served as national office-bearer in leadership positions within his party. He was serving as Special Assistant to Prime Minister at the time of the military coup d’etat in October 1999. During 1999-2008 he participated actively in PMLN’s national resistance against authoritarian rule, and led the resistance in his native district.
